Abstract
The ageostrophic vertical velocity field for the mesoscale dynamics of the Alboran Sea is determined by means of synoptic data and numerical solution of the omega equation. For the stationary, horizontal geostrophic velocity field, a fourth-order, compact operator differentiation is used. The vertical ageostrophic flow is determined by means of a numerical solution of the omega equation with a Q vector formulation, solved by means of a fourth-order accurate, compact operator method. The numerical results confirm that on a macroscale, upward motion occurs upstream of the anticyclonic rotation while downward motion mesoscale takes place downstream.
