Abstract.
In this article I describe some of Lo Woltjer’s many accomplishments in research and in European astronomy. Then I review recent advances in the discovery of quasars and galaxies at redshifts greater than five and discuss their implications for the understanding of the formation and evolution of both galaxies and their central black holes.
