Since the first description of viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state in Vibrio cholerae by Colwell et al. (1985), there have been several reports of VBNC state in human pathogenic bacteria. This chapter discusses the aspects pertaining to the retention of pathogenicity in VBNC pathogens.
