Coastal aquifers in the Middle East and North Africa region

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region is probably the most water-scarce area in the world. Low precipitation and high evaporation rates lead to the scarcity of surface water resources and heavy dependence on groundwater. Excessive groundwater extraction has caused drastic decline in water tables, seawater intrusion and salinization of coastal aquifers. Five articles in Hydrogeology Journal present the latest efforts to address these coastal aquifer issues in the MENA region, by using various inter-disciplinary methods, including mathematical modeling, isotopic tracers, field hydro-geochemical survey, and managed artificial recharge.
