The Progress in the Verification of Key Technologies for Floating Structures near Islands and Reefs

In view of the urgent requirements of the development and construction of islands and reefs. The research projects entitled “Floating Support Platform Project” and “Responses and Structural Safety of Very Large Floating Structures in Complicated Ocean Geographical Environment” have been finished with the support of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and Ministry of Science and Technology. To verify the fruitful research products, especially to validate the prediction methods for solving the above-mentioned challenges, a two-module semi-submersible-type “Scientific Research & Demonstration Platform (SRDP)” was built and deployed in August 2019 at the site about 1000 m off an island with water depth of around 40 m in South China Sea.
The special column on "the Progress in the verification of key technologies for floating structures near islands and reefs" will cover the contents of the on-site test consist of measurements, predictions and comparisons of the following six items: the wave environment near islands and reefs, the hydroelastic responses of the platform (the surrounding environment conditions, platform motions, structural stresses, mooring chain tensions), the connector related local strengths, the corrosion protection status, the wave attenuating effects of the floating breakwater, and the efficiency of the wave energy converter. To continuously measure and inspect the required test data, the corresponding monitoring systems for the above six items were set up. The issue aims at providing an opportunity for researchers and practitioners working in the field of structural and safety assessment of floating bodies near islands and reefs to disseminate their new ideas and research results.
