The Ocean Microbiome

Our oceans and seas harbor microbial communities which are critical to the health of earth. Microbes are found in many natural and unnatural ocean environments including on corals, in mangroves and associated with many marine species. They are also routinely described as being associated with floating plastic trash.

This Collection of Microbial Ecology will include reviews and research papers and is devoted to expanding our understanding of ocean microbial ecology, including what we have learned about microbes associated with marine species including marine mammals, how microbes influence nutrient cycling, microbe populations at the interface of fresh and salt water, and microbes as potential probiotic species in the oceans. The microbial populations to be included in this collection include viruses, bacteria, archaea, bacteriophage, microalgae, protozoa and fungi. Understanding or describing novel biochemical pathways, or chemical structures elucidated from ocean species is also within scope.
