Craniopharyngioma

Craniopharyngiomas are rare intracranial tumors with characteristic yet diverse pathophysiology, presentation, and management. Successful management of these tumors requires a multidisciplinary approach, tailoring therapies to the patients’ unique presentation. The advancements of surgical techniques, stereotactic radiation therapy, molecular profiling and targeted therapy have altered the paradigms used to treat craniopharyngiomas in a multimodal patient-specific manner. The unique location of craniopharyngiomas, originating in the parasellar region and extending around the skull base and the base of the brain results in presentations that can affect vision, hormonal function, cognition and behavior. Hence, the comorbidities of treatment can result in significant deficits that can affect quality of life in diverse capacities. In this special edition of the Journal of Neuro-Oncology, we provide a comprehensive overview of contemporary, multimodal management of craniopharyngiomas, addressing surgical approaches, complication management, radiotherapy, endocrinopathy management, hypothalamic dysfunction, molecular targeted therapy and precision medicine.
