Gastrointestinal Infectious Diseases: Challenges for Health - Insights from Epidemiology and Pathophysiology

Intestinal infectious diseases pose significant challenges and health implications, particularly in Asia. The region faces unique regional health issues related to disease prevalence and epidemiology. Gaining insights into transmission modes, risk factors, and prevention is vital for effective public health responses. Collaborative efforts involving researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers are essential to address regional challenges. Understanding the dynamics of these infections is crucial to design targeted interventions and mitigate the impact of gastrointestinal infections on public health.

  • Hein Min Tun

Dr. Hein Min Tun is a public health veterinarian, currently an Associate Professor at the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and a Lead Scientist at the Microbiota I-Center (MagIC). He is also leading the System Microbiology and Antimicrobial Resistance (SMART) lab at the Li Ka Shing Institute of Health Sciences of CUHK. His research interests range from studies on the role of gut microbiome in health and diseases to host-microbe interactions especially in the gastrointestinal system. Moreover, One Health surveillance of antimicrobial resistant bacteria is another area of his research.

  • Yoshiyuki Goto

Dr. Yoshiyuki Goto received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Medicine, the University of Tokyo in 2009. He then pursued postdoctoral training as a research scientist and subsequently joined Columbia University Medical Center in 2012. He studied the interplay between commensal bacteria and host immune and epithelial cells. After his postdoctoral training, Dr. Goto started his laboratory, the Division of Molecular Immunology, Medical Mycology Research Center, Chiba University, in 2015. Dr. Goto's research aims to investigate the roles of gut microorganisms in establishing the host immune system and protecting against pathogen infections.
