Wealth in Couples

The special issue "Wealth in couples" continues recent efforts to evaluate the consequences of the increasing trend toward separation of economic resources among partners. This trend was observed previously for income and this special issue offers deeper insights into it by considering wealth. The special issue consists of five original, empirical studies that complement each other in pursuing three innovative contributions: First, they shed light on the existence of within-couple wealth inequalities documenting the gender wealth gap among partners by using various unique datasets on net wealth, pension rights, and matrimonial property regimes. Second, the studies identify factors affecting within-couple wealth inequalities by highlighting the role of demographic processes as well as of the institutional context in shaping these inequalities. Finally, the present contributions analyse the link between wealth ownership structure in the households and gender differences in subjective wellbeing. Overall, the findings are not just relevant because they make theoretical and empirical advances but also because they can inform policy and institutional design.
