Cerebellum and language

The cerebellum is historically considered as an ad hoc neural apparatus for motion control that manages the coordination, stabilization, and automatism of motion. However, its cognitive function has been a research focus in the field of cognitive neuroscience in recent decades. An increasing number of studies have observed consistent activation in the cerebellum during tasks associated with reading, working memory, and cognitive control. Bilingualism provides a unique window to examine the role of the cerebellum in higher cognitive functions. It has been demonstrated that the cerebellum is activated during bilingual language comprehension and production. Therefore, this special issue of the Cerebellum calls for submissions that address the role of the cerebellum and/or the cerebro-cerebellar network in bilingual language processing. Submissions may be empirical work that examines any questions related to language processing in bilinguals. In addition, theoretical reviews on this topic are also welcome.
