Beyond the Microscope: Pathology Education and Leadership

This unique Collection will examine the aspects of being a pathologist that may not be formally addressed during pathology education. During training, the focus is learning to identify tissue abnormalities and diseases. However, it is essential that pathologists develop additional skills that will enable them to practice efficiently and accurately, and to contribute meaningfully to scientific progress in the field. The topics to be addressed in this Collection are diverse. For example: how does a pathologist deal (both professionally and personally) with making a diagnostic mistake? Does life go on afterward? (Hint: it does!) What does mindfully approaching daily case management look like? How can one interact effectively with colleagues of all ages and experiences? Additionally, appropriate management of the roles of both author and reviewer will be dissected. It is rewarding to prepare and submit a publication project, but how is direction and mentorship best provided during the process? It is an honor and a badge of academic goodwill to review a manuscript, but how is this task approached in a fair, comprehensive, and helpful way? A diverse group of pathologists will share their perspectives, experiences, and opinions. The editorial team believes that this Collection will prove useful and thought-provoking to the pathology community.
