Special Issue: International Joint Research on the Full-scale Ten-story RC Buildings Tested at E-Defense Shaking Table

In 2015 unique full-scale shaking table tests of 10-story buildings were performed at the largest and the most capable shaking table in the world at E-Defense centre in Japan. Such tests had never been performed before. The tested specimen consisted of two different RC structural systems. In one direction, the dual structural system consisting of RC frames and 7-story RC walls was provided. In the other direction, the structural system consisted only of RC frames. Two sets of experiments were performed, one on the structure funded on the classical foundations and one on the structure that was base-isolated using the base-slip mechanism. The heavily instrumented specimens provided comprehensive information about the seismic system response of the tested buildings and their structural components (beams, columns, slabs, beam-column joints, walls, etc.).
In 2019 the international research team was established to analyse the response of the tested buildings. The goal of the Special Issue is to provide a systematic overview of the work of this research team. The primary objectives of the work were to validate analytical models and assumptions in design practices and to evaluate the performances of reinforced concrete buildings against seismic loadings based on the simulation of the E-Defense tests.
