Academia and Industry collaboration on the Spatial Information

It is usual that spatial information academia focuses on theoretical problems far from reality instead of approaching to the client need faced by spatial information industries because academic and industrial behaviors and motives are so different. Such practices have resulted in the expenditure of time, labor and money on solving problems which were largely irrelevant in spatial information industry. This special issue is expected to initiate the needed conversation that will drive the development of foundational theory of how to utilize the strength of spatial information academia and industry collaboration. We particularly welcome research (theory, method, and practices) that addresses the gaps between industry versus more theoretical data and academia. The special issue is particularly interested in a multidisciplinary reflection –views from many disciplines, including Computer Science, Geographic Information Science, Social Sciences, Physical science, Life science, Positioning and Navigation, Smart City, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and Big Data, Database Management, and many others. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

• Research work in universities taken up by the industry and turned into products and services (commercialization of the university research work)

• Research topics arisen out of interaction between both academia and industry

• Academia and industry collaboration to organize funding and develop new products and services

• Seeking out academia for solutions to industry concerns

• Tailoring the university courses to align to industry requirements
