100 years of isocyanide-based multicomponent reactions

2021 was the centennial of the discovery of Passerini reaction , the first isocyanide-based multicomponent reaction to be reported in the literature. Therefore 2021 can be considered the anniversary of all isocyanide-based multicomponent reactions (IMCRs). On this occasion, Molecular Diversity intends to publish a special issue dedicated to isocyanide-based multicomponent reactions and their applications. Over the years this field has increasingly grown, expanding in various directions: a) new IMCRs have been discovered; b) new variants of the known IMCRs, by changing one of the components, have been developed; c) new scaffolds have been obtained by post-MCR transformations; d) new conditions (unusual solvents, catalysts) have been explored explored; e) new solutions of stereochemical problems have been proposed. Last but not least, IMCR are more and more applied in various fields, from the most traditional one (drug discovery), to others that have become increasingly important in recent years, such as: polymer chemistry, material synthesis, target-oriented synthesis of APIs or natural substances.
