Abstract

THE TIME HAS COME to speak a word for the American wilderness: still a vibrant part of American national life, history, and outlook; still a vast and growing, permanent and protected, legacy out there on the land itself. Strong protections, enshrined in the Wilderness Act of 1964 and in related legislation, have in turn guaranteed the survival of significant portions of the continent’s native biota.
