America Needs More National Parks

  • Michael J. Kellett

THE PEOPLE OF AMERICA invented the national park with the congressional establishment of Yellowstone in 1872. Since then, our National Park System has grown to more than 400 units, including such legendary places as Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, Independence Hall, Mount Rushmore, and the Statue of Liberty. Each year, almost 300 million people from across America and around the globe visit our national parks. The success of our park system has inspired more than a hundred other countries, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, to create hundreds of their own national parks.
