Protecting the Sanctity of Native Foods

  • Chapter
State of the World 2013

Abstract

Indigenous peoples are the caretakers of many of the last biodiverse places on Earth. Even though they only constitute 5 percent of world population and occupy 20 percent of the earth’s surface, they live in 80 percent of the world’s biological diversity hotspots. They are therefore critical to ecosystem health and should be recognized as major stakeholders and leaders in the global sustainability movement.1
