Abstract

Some believe that sustainability is achieved when dwellings are designed for and equipped with “green” technologies. But green technologies alone cannot make a dwelling sustainable. How the home performs also largely depends on the manipulation of its form and function—design that is most efficient for its intended use. This chapter illustrates several residential concepts, such as aging in place and multigenerational dwellings, that contribute to sustainability from social, economic, and cultural perspectives with consequences for local and global environments. Technological issues are addressed in later chapters.
