Abstract
The history of the Yaqui Valley reveals an intricate story of a place constantly facing and adjusting to change over time. From its management for thousands of years by the Yaqui Amerindians to its current state as a highly productive breadbasket, this rich coastal plain has provided food and other essentials for its inhabitants, has been contested ground among many different groups, and, more recently, has become an interesting model of agricultural development for the developing world. This short history attempts to trace those transitions to the present. Many of the issues raised here, especially in the most recent history, are the focus of the chapters to come.
