Abstract
I n the breakfast nook of the Sleep Inn, Fort Lauderdale, I scan the smattering of early diners and correctly identify a tall man with a long gray ponytail as my guide to the subject of mangrove restoration. Roy “Robin” Lewis III has been rebuilding mangrove habitats for thirty-five years. He started his academic career as an ichthyologist at the University of South Florida around the time that two other Floridians, William Odum and Eric Heald, were doing pioneering work on the role of mangroves in marine ecosystems. Mangroves were disappearing fast from Florida’s coastline, sacrificed for everything from condominiums to mosquito-control impoundments. In 1975 the two ecologists wrote:
