Abstract

Journalist Henry Grabar has called the bus network in the Detroit region “America’s worst transit system.” Metro Detroit is home to one of the highest shares of carless households in the country, and those residents have one of the longest average commutes to work and school, at 10.4 miles. Three of every five Detroit residents work in the suburbs, and three-quarters of people who work in Detroit commute in from outside the city.
