My grandmother was born in 1917 in Madison, South Dakota. She was a child of the Roaring Twenties, and her young life was pleasant. Grandma recounted early memories of dancing, laughter, and plenty. Yet everything changed when the Great Depression struck in 1929. It brought economic despair and a Dust Bowl that wreaked havoc across the Great Plains of the United States. As a result, my grandmother’s life was changed forever. Her father lost his job and moved away in search of work. Her mother turned their family home into a boarding house so they could earn enough to scrape by.
