Abstract

Atrip to the United States this month found the cities I visited—Miami, Dallas and Oklahoma City—in different stages of a building boom. I attended a meeting of smaller-scale developers sponsored by the Urban Land Institute in Miami and the annual gathering of more than 1,200 new urbanists in Dallas-Fort Worth. I found similarities and differences with Britain, both in the type of building going on and in the way it is affecting first-, second- and third-tier cities.
