Abstract

We analysed 227 individuals belonging to six populations of alpaca from the high-Andean zones in Peru, where livestock production is based on the breeding of domestic South American camelids (alpacas and llamas), basically alpacas from the Huacaya breed. Twenty microsatellite markers were analysed and genetic variability and genetic differentiation parameters were estimated. Expected heterozygosity (He) ranged from 0.660 in population 5 to 0.717 in population 3. Observed heterozygosity (Ho) oscillated from 0.552 in population 2 to 0.637 in population 4. Average number of alleles per locus in each population ranged from 5.65 in population 2 to 9.2 in population 1. In order to analyse the genetic structure and genetic differentiation we estimated the Wright’s F-statistics. FST values between populations ranged from 0.00466 between 4 and 6 populations pair and 0.4998 between 4 and 5 populations pairs. Average FST value between populations was 0.0299 (0.0212 - 0.0408). Average FIT and FIS values were 0.1742 (0.0789 - 0.2968) and 0.14874 (0.0551 - 0.2664) respectively. Estimated number of migrants per generation between populations was very high as we detected a scarce genetic differentiation between them. The high level of observed homozygosity may be due to inbreeding.
