Abstract
Aalius androgynus Kuntze - see Sauropus androgynus
There is often more than one scientific name (Latin binomial) used for a vegetable crop; these alternative names are considered synonyms. In some instances, the name that is currently used is not universally accepted. In addition, binomials are subject to change, especially with the increasing use of molecular genetics for assessing relatedness. As a consequence, synonyms can greatly complicate the identification of a species of interest. Since the common names are listed taxonomically in Chapter 1, having the correct scientific name is essential for finding a crop. This chapter lists synonyms for the scientific names of the vegetable crops in the text. The correct name is in bold, followed by a number that indicates the family and the specific crop within the family in Chapter 1 (e.g. 24.1. indicates the 24th family and the 1st crop). Each synonym is keyed back to the correct scientific name, which should be used to find the crop of interest.
