Abstract
For safe driving, it is necessary that the drivers perceive the current traffic situation, comprehend their meaning, and predict their status in the near future. A concept that aims to describe and integrate these different cognitive processes is Situation Awareness (SA). This chapter attempts to present an overview of situation awareness while driving, including: the theory of SA, models of SA, importance of SA, measurements of SA, driver distraction on SA, and applications of SA.
