Abstract

Renal colic caused by urolithiasis is the most common cause of upper urinary tract obstruction that prompts patients to visit to an acute care facility. Patient care providers must be aware of other less-common urological causes of upper urinary tract obstruction presenting similar to urinary stones. Although few of the clinical entities discussed in this section are true “urological emergencies,” a physician’s familiarity with all of them will be helpful in the evaluation of any patient thought to have renal colic.
