Abstract
This chapter continues the discussion of protest initiated in Chapter 2 and focuses on the workplace as the arena of protest. It concentrates on the tactics of strike action and work-ins which are associated with this form of protest and discusses the importance of these activities by referring to a number of key events which have taken place since 1970. This chapter refers to the social groups and political organisations associated with protest in the workplace, and considers the environment within which this activity is conducted. The response of the state to protest in the workplace is analysed, which includes an examination of civil and criminal law utilised in connection with industrial unrest, the reaction of the police service and the role performed by the military.
