Abstract

My introduction began with Hermione Lee’s evocative formulation of vertical and horizontal reading. I do not want to recapitulate the chapters of my book, but now that I have developed readings of authors whose chosen settings range from twelfth-century France to late twentieth-century Ireland, I feel obliged to make a few disclaimers.
