Abstract

It is always an honor to give a lecture named for an eminent scholar; it is always enjoyable when that eminent scholar is alive and present; it is most enjoyable when he is also a good friend of many years’ standing. When Eric and I first met, he was a trustee of Boston University, and the university and I were considering whether we wanted to live together. Eric’s presence on the board, I suspect, contributed substantially to the outcome.
