Abstract

The unsung hero of my father’s story is my mother. Although both grew up in Poland, they did not meet until the 1940s in Japan. Nina (“Ninotchka” to family and friends) was born in the city of Lodz, Poland, to Mordecai Rochman and Gulia Bande Rochman. The family was well educated and well to do: her father owned a textile factory, and Nina, her sisters, and brother received a fine secular and Jewish education. Nina was the top student in her school, beloved by teachers and students—sweet, with a slight streak of mischief.
