Participant-observation is the most basic ethnographic research method. Similar to playing the guitar, it seems simple at first but it takes years to truly master. However, even inexperienced researchers will be able to use this method effectively to generate large amounts of useful information if they follow the guidelines laid down in this chapter. Chapter 5, then, begins part B of the book, which is concerned with methods for conducting research at the micro-level of human behavior.
