Blessed are the Poor

  • Cheryl Walker

The charge often made against mysticism is that it concentrates wholly on the individual’s relationship with God, thereby assuming a passive relation to injustice. What about our commitment to others, such critics ask; what about the injunction to “do justice and love kindness” as it says in Micah (6:8)? With justice comes the question of earthly rewards and those who are excluded from them, in other words “the poor,” by which, it seems, we are meant to understand not simply those who lack wealth but many others as well.
