“ ‘It’s all behind you now. You must try to forget’ ” (45), Dr. Fentiman tells Tilde, his new German maid, the replacement for the English one who has been drafted to work in a munitions factory. The time is 1939, just before the outbreak of war. Tilde has come to Great Britain to do domestic work, the only kind of work she “was allowed to do” (47).
