Abstract
On April 21, 1999, I discussed with some of my students the news story of the day: Columbine. We exchanged what little we knew and began to discuss the difficult questions of causes and solutions. I don’t remember much of what we said, but I do recall offering this piece of advice: “You’re going to hear lots of people on TV explaining why this happened and what we should do about it. These are important matters, but always ask: What is their wider social and political agenda? Answer that question before you agree with them.”
