Abstract
The spatio-temporal limits of politics thrust representation to the centre of debates about democracy. Most commentators assume that even in smaller and simpler political systems than the EU there is little alternative to conducting democracy through representatives. Ideas for returning significant areas of decision-making to citizens are thus often proposed as supplements or correctives, and not as alternatives, to representation.
