Abstract

From the mid-1980s to the end of the 1990s, the Chinese army was a savvy and successful entrepreneur. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) built a sprawling commercial empire stretching into virtually every corner of the Chinese economy and abroad. Thousands of enterprises earned hundreds of millions of dollars annually. They carved out lucrative niches in some of China’s fastest-growing industries.
