Abstract
The Russian withdrawal from Transcaucasia during the 1730s was very disillusioning for many Georgians, who had hoped for liberation from Islamic rule. The most pro-Russian of the Georgian monarchs, Vakhtang VI, had been deposed by the Turks and forced into exile in Russia. Most of Georgia was subject to what was called the osmanloba, a harsh military occupation marked by violence and looting, perpetrated by the Ottomans and their mountain allies upon the populace.
