Shortly after the appointment of a new government by the Franco regime on 25 March 1957 six nations signed the treaties of Rome by which the European Economic Community was constituted. The upper echelons of the Franco regime were well informed about the process of European integration and the foundation of the EEC did not take anyone by surprise. The press gave the news without excessive detail, as was normal with European affairs, and comments ranged from indifference to hostility.
