Abstract
This chapter gives an overview of Anglo Japanese economic relations from the early seventeenth century to the present time, focusing on the key terms of ‘trade and industry’, ‘finance’, ‘technology’ and ‘the industrial challenge’. In so doing, it also describes the background to the eight chapters that comprise the rest of the book. For ease of analysis, we have divided the 400-year story of Anglo Japanese commercial and economic relations into the following four periods, although we recognize that these divisions cannot be exact.
