Abstract

During the Stalin era and after the official formula ran that “the USSR has finally solved the nationalities question inherited from pre-revolutionary times”. Writers as well as historians had to hew to this ideological line. The satirists Il’f and Petrov, touring the United States in the 1930s, were asked by someone: “How is the Jewish problem being solved in the USSR?” They answered: “It doesn’t have to be solved. We do have Jews but we don’t have a problem.”
