Abstract
Over the last decade, European integration has been characterized mainly by enlargement politics. Since the European Union (EU) was expanded to include eastern Europe between 2004 and 2007, when 12 states joined the EU, the process has continued and today includes Balkan states such as Croatia. In addition, discussions about the accession of Ukraine, Georgia and other countries bordering Russia are looming on the horizon.
