Abstract

This chapter sets the context for the 2015 Women’s World Cup and highlights the historical lack of research into women’s sport and women’s football in particular, especially after the 1980s boom in scholarship into the men’s game. It also provides some context for my interest in this tournament, and my professional background in sports journalism and sports academia.
