Abstract
It is argued that mainstream economics almost completely ignores the role power plays in determining economic outcomes. As J.K. Galbraith said, this “destroys its relation with the real world”. Since mainstream or neoclassical economics is the dominant paradigm in schools and universities today, this has a limiting and detrimental effect on the way young economists are taught to think about their discipline.
