Abstract

This chapter introduces the reader to the terrain of the book to follow, specifically discussing what is meant by ‘the cognitive turn’ and ‘practice as research’ (PaR) and how the project of this book relates to the existing literature in the field. It also discusses the methodology of this book—what we might call, following Wittgenstein, ‘conceptual clarification’—and David Saltzs suggestion that performance theory needs philosophy.
