Abstract
The Ottoman Empire in the early twentieth century shared a strong sense of historical continuity with the Islamic caliphates of the past. Under the Ottoman dynasty, as under previous Islamic dynasties, communal reference points and definitions of identity dated back centuries: to the life and times of the Prophet Muhammad.
