Abstract
This chapter is centered on direct-democratic forms of popular influence. In this realm, the United States distinguished itself at an early stage from the rest of the world. But the deviation has become less pronounced in recent years, because one particular institution for direct popular involvement—the primary election—has in part been copied overseas.
