The United States of America: A Special Newcomer among States
In this chapter, I give a brief overview of the process by which the United States came into being. I show that a special type of state was formed, with roots stretching back both to Europe and to the modes of governance developed in colonial times. Along the way, some basic traits of the new state are clarifed.
