Abstract
Current debates about free speech on campus, and arguments over the limits to academic freedom, extend beyond the confines of higher education. Discernible public unease over the emergence of a new generation of censorious students sits alongside discussion about the role universities should play in preventing terrorism, or the place of academic freedom in a marketized higher education sector where commercial interests often dominate. It is important that such questions are being asked, even more so when academic freedom is considered in the broader context of the purpose of a university.
