Abstract
This chapter outlines the sociocultural factors that play a part in how therapeutic songwriting practices are shaped. Several interpretations of the term ‘sociocultural’ have pervaded the literature, and I have no intention of surveying them here. For the purposes of this chapter, the term refers to the combination of both social and cultural factors that impact a songwriter-therapist relationship, a songwriter-songwriter relationship, and the various processes involved in creating lyrics and music that are shaped by social and cultural group membership.
